ORLEANS — Springs Valley’s volleyball squad fought through a close five-game series to take a 16-25, 25-12, 26-28, 25-16, 15-12 win over Orleans during round two of Sectional 59 Wednesday night.
“We played Orleans in the regular season, and it was just like this, except that we lost the first two,” said Valley coach Leslie Akers. “Orleans just kept digging and setting and hitting, so they just don’t quit. They’re a good team.”
Darcie Warner led the Blackhawks’ offensive attack with 18 kills and an ace, while Cecilia Joffee added 10 kills, two aces, one solo block and three block assists.
“We were really never able to let Darcie showcase her skills tonight,” Akers said. “We didn’t get her set as often as we could, but if we had, there would have been a lot more of those balls that she absolutely hammered.”
Skylar Stephenson tallied nine kills and five block assists, while senior Victoria VanderPan racked up 35 assists, seven block assists and an ace.
“I think our seniors were really tight,” Akers said. “It means so much to them. I told them before we came out that they should not pray for things to be easy. They should pray for the strength to get the job done.”
It was the Blackhawks’ use of their ...
front line that left the Bulldogs reeling late in the matchup. “The rotation Valley uses is very tough,” said Orleans coach Mary Lou Denbo. “They’re very big, and that causes serious problems up front.”
Whitney Parks went 19 for 19 from the service line, including 20 digs and 18 kills, to spearhead the Bulldogs’ offense.
Calli Johnson was 14 for 14 serving with 12 kills, while Hailey Elliott went 12 for 15 serving.
“I’m proud of the girls,” Denbo said. “They came back when they had to win a game. We’re two very evenly matched teams, so we did a nice job.”
Sarah Blevins was 14 for 14 serving with 19 assists and seven kills.
Emily Grace went 10 for 11 serving including 16 digs and four kills, while Sarah Hoskins rounded out Orleans’ offense with seven digs, three kills and was 16 for 17 serving.
“Our serving has been really good recently,” Denbo said. “We’ve only been missing one or two each match, and we came again strong tonight. We’ve had a good year. We’re 23 and 6, so I can’t complain. We’ll just hang it up and start over in a little while.”
Northeast Dubois and Trinity Lutheran went head to head following Valley’s win, with the Jeeps claiming a 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 win to move on to the championship round, where they will face Valley tonight at 7 p.m.
