Commodores roll past Blackwawks Times-Mail, Bedford, IN By BILL KEANE bill@tmnews.com
“I’m proud of our kids. We lose eight great seniors and I just hope the younger kids can learn by their example."
Valley coach Mark Hammond
FRENCH LICK — The seventh-ranked Perry Central Commodores were odds-on favorites to capture the Sectional 40 crown after knocking off Linton last week and they left nothing to chance Friday night at Death Valley.
With the newly-opened casino as the backdrop, the Commodores rolled to a 21-0 halftime lead before dealing the Springs Valley Blackhawks a season-ending 41-0 setback.
“We’ve got to give Perry Central a lot of credit,” Valley coach Mark Hammond said. “They’ve just got a heck of a ballclub right now and their size really kind of overpowered us. We managed to hang with them and hang with them, but what it boiled down to was we just couldn’t get anything going offensively and they just wore us down and that was pretty much it.”
The Hawks entered the contest knowing they’d have to stop junior Bo Gibson, who ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns in the Commodores’ 38-7 win over Valley on Oct. 6. But with a full house on the visiting sideline, Gibson stole the show once again, racking up 286 yards on 27 carries, while scoring the first five touchdowns.
“The Gibson kid is a big part of their offense and he’s a good back,” Hammond said. “He wore us down, but the biggest thing I think, was their size. That’s what hurt us the most.” With junior Joey Piper, who comes in at 6-foot-1, 350 pounds, solidifying the offensive line, and little brother Robbie, a 6-3, 375-pound sophomore, anchoring the defensive front, the Commodores had their way with the Hawks up front.

Valley searching for first sectional title since 1992
FRENCH LICK — Many folks in French Lick have been eagerly anticipating the opening of the new casino this week, but the buzz around Springs Valley High School has been about the upcoming football game.
The Blackhawks will entertain seventh-ranked Perry Central in the Sectional 40 championship game Friday night at Death Valley.
The Commodores escaped with a hard-fought 21-14 victory over Linton last week, while the Hawks are coming off a 28-6 drubbing of North Daviess, a win that secured Valley a spot in the sectional final for the first time since the year 2000.
The Hawks suffered a 14-8 setback to Perry Central on the same date (Nov. 3) six years ago and they’ll need an all-around team effort Friday night if they hope to ...

Boys Sports: Valley survives muddy North Daviess

Valley survives muddy North Daviess Times-Mail, Bedford, IN By BILL KEANE bill@tmnews.com
ELNORA — When it comes sectional time, the name of the game is survive and advance, and it was definitely survival of the fittest at North Daviess High School Friday night where the Springs Valley Blackhawks braved the conditions and came away with a decisive 28-6 victory over the Cougars to advance to the Sectional 40 finale.
The Cougars got on the board with less than three minutes gone in the opening quarter, but the Hawks pitched a shutout the rest of the way, scoring 20 points in the worst of conditions during the second half.
“Our defense has been playing really well and we knew North Daviess was going to come out ready to play,” Valley coach Mark Hammond said. “They came out with great emotion and great intensity and got one on us early, but our kids, like they’ve done all year, they didn’t quit. We knew it was going to be a long game and our defense kept us right there until our offense got going, so it was really a big night for us.”
With water already standing on the field and gusting winds driving a steady rain, it was more like sink or swim at times and the Hawks found themselves treading water early when North Daviess junior Deven Shake took a handoff from Garrett Byrer and set sail around left end for a 68-yard touchdown at the 9:07 mark of the first quarter.
The Hawks failed to record a first down on their first two possessions, but junior Taylor Wilkinson picked off a Byrer pass midway through the first quarter and Valley had the upper hand the rest of the way.
After racking up first downs on runs by Chris Walker and Luke Allstott, Valley was forced to punt, but the Hawks’ defense refused to budge and when the Cougars attempted to punt the ball back from their own 26, the snap from center sailed over the head of Byrer, who smartly kicked the ball out of the end zone for a safety.
The free kick gave the Hawks the ball on the North Daviess 37 and they needed just two plays to find the end zone as Brant Crowder went up the middle, breaking tackles at the line and in the defensive backfield before rambling 34 yards for the score that gave Valley an 8-6 edge at the half.
With the conditions rapidly deteriorating, Hammond felt confident with the slim lead at the half.
“At halftime we talked about having the lead and we knew that’s all we needed,” Hammond said. “I really didn’t think we’d get too close to the end zone in the second half, but we knew if we kept them from scoring we were going to win the game. “But a credit to our offensive line and our backs, they ran extremely hard the second half. I don’t know if they just got used to the conditions or what, but they did a really nice job of running the ball and just hanging on to it.”
Allstott picked off a pass midway through the third quarter and returned it to the North Daviess nine-yard line and Crowder found the end zone three plays later to push the Valley lead to eight.
Dustin Land scored on a quarterback sneak with 8:59 to play and Crowder capped the scoring with a 48-yard scamper at the 2:01 mark.
The Hawks and Cougars combined to put the ball on the ground 10 times, but the lone turnover for Valley came on their only pass attempt in the contest, midway through the ...

Blackhawks sneak past Senators, 9-6 Times-Mail, Bedford, IN By BILL KEANE bill@tmnews.com
FRENCH LICK — The Springs Valley Blackhawks didn’t put forth the offensive show they did in their regular-season finale, but they did score enough points to pick up a big sectional victory over West Washington Friday night.
The Blackhawks scored a touchdown late in the first quarter and added a safety with 2:15 left in the contest to secure a 9-6 victory in the Sectional 40 opener at Death Valley.
Springs Valley’s defense bent, but refused to break after allowing a 15-yard touchdown run by Josh Allen midway through the second quarter, coming up with big play after big play to keep the Senators at bay.
“I’ve been saying it all year, the defense really sets the tone for this team,” Valley coach Mark Hammond said. “If we can fly around the field and do what we did tonight, we’re going to be right in the ballgame and it’s going to be a good night for us.
“The defense really showed up tonight and did an awesome job. West Washington’s offense looked unbelievably fast and quick on film, but we did an outstanding job of keeping them off balance and not just stacking it up on one side and that was a big key for us.”
The Valley defense came up with its first big play with 3:14 left in the first quarter when ...

Cougars stumble against Springs Valley
Washington Times Herald By Tom Bradley, T-H Correspondent
FRENCH LICK — North Daviess Cougars went to Death Valley to battle the Springs
Valley Blackhawks in the season finale and came away manhandled, in a 45-16 loss
in a very physical contest.
The Cougars best opportunity in the first half to put
points on the board came on their opening drive of the game. Deven Shake picked
up 10 yards on a key fourth and five play. Then Garrett Byrer scrambled for 18
yards to the Blackhawks’ 13. Byrer found Ty Sipes in the left corner of the end
zone, but the pass just went off his hands. Two more incomplete passes turned
the ball over to the Blackhawks on downs.
“We had a good opportunity to score on the opening
drive, this could have changed the complexion of this game,” commented a
dejected ND coach Scott Helms after the game. “I am proud of this team as we
have improved greatly from last year, but we still have some kids that have not
improved as much as we think they should have.”
The result was the Blackhawks scoring five of the next
six times they received the ball. First was a 74-yard run by Luke Allstott, who
ran for 133 yards on the night. Next was Brant Crowder turn as he had runs of 4
and 8 yards for touchdowns. Then Dustin Land found Taylor Wilkinson on 14-yard
scoring strike, with :18 seconds remaining in the half, putting Valley up
26-0.
North Daviess got the ball to open the second half and
the turnover bug popped up again as Byrer was sacked and fumbled with the Hawks
recovering at the Cougar five. Two plays later Chris Walker went in from three
yards out making it 32-0.
North Daviess would not ...

7th-ranked Perry rolls over Valley Times-Mail, Bedford, IN
LEOPOLD — Springs Valley couldn’t do boo with Bo, and it turned into a scary
night as Class A’s seventh-ranked Perry Central pounded the Blackhawks, 38-7, in
a key PLAC showdown Friday night at Leopold.
Tailback Bo Gibson ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries to
lift the Commodores into the PLAC lead at 3-0 (6-1 overall). Valley slipped to
2-1 in league play and 4-3 overall.
“They just got the running game going early and were too big up front, and Bo
was too much force to handle,” said Springs Valley coach Mark Hammond. “Anything
we threw at them, they were able to counteract it. Gibson opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run at the 10:22 mark of
the first quarter, and added a nine-yard scoring sprint to make it 14-0 after
one period.
The Blackhawks battled back to cut it to 14-7 when Tayor Wilkinson gathered
in a 28-yard TD pass from Dustin Lad with 11:41 remaining in the first half.
The Commodores could not be denied, though, and ...

Blackhawks edge past Braves Warrick Publishing - Boonville,IN,USA By Nathan Blackford-Warrick Publishing Online
Spring's Valley quarterback Dustin Land completed just
four passes on Friday night, but two of them were for touchdowns. That gave the
Blackhawks just enough to knock off Tecumseh 13-7.
Land threw his first
touchdown pass midway through the second quarter, then lobbed the winning score
38 yards to Taylor Wilkinson with 9:43 to play in the game. That sent Springs
Valley to 4-2, while Tecumseh fell to 1-6.
The Braves seemed to have the
momentum in the second half, after putting together a scoring drive that
culminated with a 2-yard touchdown run from Bryce Speicher with 4:02 to play in
the third quarter.
But Springs Valley came back. With 9:43 to play and
the score tied 7-7, Land heaved a deep ball down the left sidelines, and when
Tecumseh defensive back Chad Coffelt got turned the wrong way, Wilkinson made
the catch and ran untouched for what proved to be the winning
score.
“Once we got across midfield and got some
better field position, I wanted to take a shot,” said Springs Valley Coach Mark
Hammond. “Taylor was out there, and we told Dustin to just throw it up to him,
give him a chance to catch it. Taylor did a nice job of coming back to the ball,
and he made a couple of nice moves to get a big score for us.”
“We had
the match-up that we wanted on that play in our man coverage, but I think we got
caught looking inside for the run,” said Tecumseh coach Tom Osborne. “That was
enough to give them the catch over the top, and we could not recover from that.
Our coverage just broke down in the best scenario that we could draw
up.”
Tecumseh had more offensive snaps and ...

Boys Sports: Blackhawks beat Braves to earn fourth victory

Blackhawks beat Braves to earn fourth victory Times-Mail, Bedford, IN
LYNNVILLE — The Springs Valley Blackhawks got back on the winning track with
a hard-fought 13-7 victory over the Tecumseh Braves on the road Friday night.
The two teams played to a stalemate until midway through the second quarter
when Dustin Land hooked up with Zeke Allstott on a 16-yard scoring pass. Luke
Allstott added the PAT and the Hawks took a 7-0 lead to the lockerroom at the
half.
“Our kids came out really fired up,” Valley assistant coach Daniel Wolford
said. “They didn’t get to play last week and I think they were looking to make a
statement tonight and just came out ready to play from the start. That’s a long
bus ride for us and we were afraid they’d come out flat, but they didn’t.”
The Braves tied it up late in the third quarter, but the Hawks refused to
allow another score and when Taylor Wilkinson hauled in a 38-yard pass from Land
with 9:43 left to play, Valley had all the points it would need.
“Our defense came up with a lot of big stops tonight,” Wolford said. “We
scored with almost 10 minutes left to play and we forced them to punt twice in
the final 10 minutes, so the defense really stepped up when we needed it
tonight.”
Brant Crowder led the Hawks with 85 yards on 15 carries, while Luke Allstott
added 52 yards on 10 carries and Chris Walker finished with 42 yards on six
totes as Valley racked up 176 yards on the ground.
“That’s usually our game-plan, to get what we can on the ground,” Wolford
said. “There were times when it worked real well and a few times when they
blitzed and caught us in the backfield, but for the most part we tried to use
our power game and it worked.”
Land completed four passes for 85 yards as the Hawks finished with 261 yards
of offense.
Springs Valley (4-2) travels to Leopold to ...
